The inspiration for Gum came from the characteristics of the site environment and the original personality of the GumGum Group. The design team aimed to create a space that combines nature, authenticity, relaxation, and freedom. Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are greeted by a 6-meter-tall tree, symbolizing a spiritual theme of natural gathering. The radial arrangement of various seats creates different forms of free gathering, while the use of planting blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The green scenery of the backyard and front yard, along with the hanging green boxes from the ceiling, allows nature to dance freely throughout the entire venue. The space arrangement aims to break down the barriers of urban life and create a space where people can talk, eat, work, play, and heal both physically and emotionally.
The realization of Gum involved the use of various materials, including warm-colored painted wood, wooden plywood, natural texture concrete, rusty iron, and blue ceramic tiles. These materials were carefully selected to enhance the warm and intimate atmosphere of the restaurant bar.
Gum spans an area of approximately 250 square meters with a ceiling height of 6 meters. The project was completed in November 2020 in Neihu District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The design team faced several challenges during the project. The limited timeframe of just one month for design and construction posed a significant challenge. Additionally, balancing economic considerations with the desired aesthetic atmosphere was a delicate task. However, through careful planning and execution, the team successfully overcame these challenges and brought Gum to life.
Gum has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which successfully integrates art, science, and technology. Gum contributes to improving the quality of life by providing a unique dining experience that connects people and awakens their senses.
The design team's vision for Gum was to create a space that not only connects people but also awakens their senses and allows them to truly feel the environment. The design aims to evoke emotions, break down boundaries, and reveal the unique characteristics of the space.
